It bwoke!

My spokey dokeys must have been too heavy for my race wheelset, cos I bwoke a spoke today!  What a bummer – I’d made the effort to be out the door by 5.45am this morning for my long ride, and was around 35 minutes into it when I heard a good bang from the back wheel.  If I hadn’t read recently on Bec’s blog about her spoke breaking during the Hawkes Bay race, I wouldn’t have known that spokes even break!!  I’m so naive!  What to do, what to do?  Naturally I phoned home, because I’m a female and had to share my news with someone.  Oh dear, I got Graham out of bed. ;-)   “Can I keep going on it?” I asked.  “Um, no!” he replied.  So I had to limp home, while Graham resurrected my old back wheel (it didn’t have a tyre/tube on it).  Unfortunately I didn’t have a spare tyre at home, so he had to wait until I got home to take the tyre and tube off my damaged wheel.  Fortunately he’s quicker than I am at changing tyres so I wasn’t off the road for too long.  So it was back out to Motukarara for the second time (that road is boring enough once in a day, let alone twice!).

It’s amazing how quickly a wheel can develop a wobble in it when it doesn’t have the spoke to support it.  I was down to 19kph on the way home, because the darn thing kept rubbing against the brake on each rotation (I remember Bec commenting on that too, but at least I didn’t bike 100km on it this morning, like she did!!).

Question:  Does anyone know what happens on a long distance course like Ironman if you have a mechanical failure like a broken spoke??  Does someone give you a replacement wheel, make a temporary fix, or is your race over??

I took the wheel into the LBS this afternoon and typical, they don’t have that particular type of spoke in stock and will have to order it in.  But I’m in no hurry to get the wheel back, and I took the opportunity of booking it in for a service the week prior to Wanaka.  There you go – I was meant to break a spoke today. ;-)

The rest of the ride was pretty uneventful.  My leggies were pretty fatigued still, and it showed when it came to gear selection on the hills.  The granny gear got deployed a few times, which I wasn’t happy about!  The Summit Road was blanketed in thick cloud, and and the easterly wind up there was beastly – it made the cloud swirl around and it was pretty cold.

Right, at Bec’s request, here’s the piccie of my ‘new do’ – a before and after.  Stacey who applied the colour wanted to take a before and after photo too, because she was so excited that I was willing to go for such a change (although I think she thought I was going to go shorter than I did!).   I looked like a bloody surfie when I arrived (my frizzy, straight out of the shower look), so it was really nice to get my hair straightened after yonks of being afraid to fry my hair for fear of going bald.  I wish I could stand parting with $380 to buy the new purple GHDs – my cheap Briscoes jobbies are going to have to continue to suffice…

I can’t possibly go swimming now! :-)

Tomorrow I have a 45 minute OW swim to do, plus a 90 minute ride, then on Sunday, it’s a pool swim.  I’m also thinking I’ll have to do Tuesday’s 2.5 hour hill run on Sunday too, as Graham is working late shift next week and I won’t get out otherwise.  Such is life.

Six people are watching my boat on TradeMe.  Graham seems to think that if it sells, he’ll put put the proceeds towards a holiday in China – I’m not quite sure how much he thinks I’m going to get for said boat!

  1. What a great looking Khatmandu top, ooops I mean hair style/cut/colour :) Seriously, it looks terrific. Somewhat of an improvement ;-) Not that the fresh out of the shower special was bad – right, time to see if I can pull my foot out.

Pity about Graham being woken, I mean sorry to hear your spoke broke.

Curious as to whether you’ve booked your bike back in at Cycleways down Ferry Road.

I found GHD’s on TradeMe today. Not that they’re any cheaper. Maybe the sale of your boat would be better spent on the GHD’s instead of a token gesture towards a trip to China.

  2. You’re very cheeky. You must be wearing your go go dress. ;-)

Actually, no, I didn’t go back to Cycleways. A couple of reasons – the tyres they put back on my race wheels after they trued them had bald patches on them (like you could see the grey of the belt underneath) and yet they put them back on without pointing the areas out to me. I hadn’t noticed the baldness myself until I got home with them, but I thought a mechanic might have brought them to my attention and recommended replacing them. He knew I was doing an event the next day, and they’re race wheels for goodness sake, so who would have threadbare tyres on their bike for a race??

Plus, my gears are slipping all over the place – both on my old wheelset and new. I don’t think he adjusted the derrailleur very well at all. Just basic stuff that I didn’t think was up to scratch really.

It’s a tough road finding the perfect bike shop. ;-)

  3. nice do! i still have not booked one yet! bloomin work has gone nuts! dont american know we go on holiday at this time of the year!
better get on to that tomorrow after my swim.
we are going to CB at 8am if you are keen.

  4. Aah that Graham is earning his sainthood lately isn’t he!
Yep broken spokes will slow you down a lot, at least you weren’t over in Rapaki like I was when I broke mine! Not sure what they do at IM, I think they have neutral support which means they may be able to loan you a spare wheel, otherwise you may just be toast! Zarnia will know, but get the bike shop to check your spokes, they can tell if they are worn.

  5. Oh that’s right – I forgot you broke one too Nades! It’s made me nervous now – at least you can repair a puncture, but there’s nothing you can do about a spoke. It’s such a dumb thing to break!

  6. Yeah spokes are about all I can’t do in an emergency I think. Having said that my rear derailleur is not a happy girl at the moment, not sure I could fix that, I can fix a broken chain tho! I figure in all my years of cycling I have broken one spoke, so that means the chance of one breaking at a crucial moment or in a critical race is kinda slim.

  7. not sure about that, but do know that a guy broke one riding down to the start one year and they fixed it for him while he was doing the swim and then handed him the wheel when he entered transition so he just had to put on the wheel. I guess they will try and fix it if they can, but it may be a long wait, so i would just keep biking. i’ll ask one of the guys in the morning they will know.

see when your a member of the tri club you get to know these people and can ask them questions. ;-)

got the list of new members today and there appear to be some names missing ???????

now about that newsletter, better get on to it ;-)

  8. Nice new haircut Mrs Harris – I think Ella looks more like you know. Yes aren’t the GHD’s awesome (not that I’d know, I don’t even put product in my hair!!), that’s why Monique has made a special request for them for Xmas – look online thou, you can get them cheaper. By the way, selling of the boat = no more multi-sport events???????????????????????

  9. LOVE the new look Rach!

  10. Which boat are you selling?

  11. It’s okay Megan – not ‘yours’!! I’m selling the Sprinter and the Renegade. I’ll keep the Eclipse (not really sure why, but I will!!).

  12. love the hair Rachel, very nice! (i can’t live without my GHD’s, I got mine about 6 years ago now, and they get used virtually every day).

  13. No stress Rachel,
Chances of breaking a spoke are very minimal, if you do there should be mechnic support to help you (check with organisation), they have it at IMNZ.
Just make sure your bike has had a godd service a month or so out from IM.
If you do break a spoke it just depends how badly. You can still ride carefully (esp down hills) just wrap the broken spoke round the other spokes. Things only become a problem if you develop a significant buckle. Old fashioned 32 spoke wheels are designed to be able to cope with out the odd spoke or two (why they’re good for training) so it depends on the wheel design.

  14. Psst, Rachel (looks to the left, to the right – makes sure no one else can hear) – is that your Coach?

  15. Nice new look matey :) Not sure if I like the amount of times I am mentioned in your bloggy! Or am I flattered?? hehe too funny. YAY for me breaking a spoke before you, so you knew what was happening when you heard the BANG. LIke you said….at least you didn’t ride 100km with a broken spoke haha oh dear, yes I am here to do things so you can all learn from them ;) Pleasure to teach! haha
